Counselor Position Description
"The earth is the Lord's and all that is in it, the world, and
those who live in it." (Ps 24:1) "In the beginning was the
Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the
beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without
him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was
life, and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the
darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it." (Jn. 1:1-5)
Purpose: Counselors shall provide a learning opportunity for campers to experience God's Word in the midst of God's
world. Counselors must believe in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and serve as a model of the Christian life as
they share and provide leadership for family groups.
Accountability: To the Director of Camps and Conferences through Summer Program Director and Assistant
Summer Program Director.
Responsibilities:
- To recognize that each camper is a unique child of God.
- To understand, accept and interpret the philosophy of the camp.
- To participate actively in staff conferences and meetings.
- To develop skills and attitudes so as to do the best job
possible.
- To maintain all equipment in safe operating condition.
- To gather needed supplies and equipment to maintain an effective
program.
- To discuss, post and enforce safety regulations (this is especially
important on the waterfront).
- To organize and participate in camp living in the hogan unit,
including housekeeping, age appropriate activities and program.
- To assist campers in activity decision-making and the development of
Christian community.
- To be responsible for health and safety conditions in the hogan area
and in all other activities.
- To serve the hogan unit as a Christian example and educator.
- To Assist with camp program activities and other camp-wide
activities.
- To see that proper dining hall procedures and conduct are
maintained.
- To work cooperatively with co-counselors and support staff
- To perform other duties as may be assigned by the Summer Program
Director or Assistant Program Director.

- Good moral character and integrity
- Good health and vitality
- Enthusiasm and positive attitude
- Emotional maturity
- Enjoyment of outdoor living
- A respect and appreciation of children, ability to understand the
needs of campers, and the good judgment to place the needs of the
campers and the camp ahead of personal desires
- Interest in contributing to the achievement of the goals and
objectives of the camp
- Ability to work as a member of a group
- Have a strong Christian commitment and an ability to communicate
it
Relationships: Directly supervised by the Summer
Program Director and Assistant Program Director. Relates to the summer
program specific staff as a colleague.
Time Required: Contract.
Evaluation: Weekly group evaluations with Program
Director and Assistant Program Directors. There will be a midsummer
written review and end-of-Summer review with the Director of C & C and
the Summer Program Director.
